Culver City put together their first public outreach meeting for “Reimagine Fox Hills” on Thursday, July 28th in the Garden Room of Veteran’s Memorial. City Council asked Sol Blumenfeld (Culver City Community Development Director), Todd Tipton (Economic Development Manager), and Elaine Gerety Warner (Economic Development Project Manager) to put together some ideas on how to Reimagine the Fox Hills business park area. These are just ideas that they came up with. Below you can read what they presented. Please mark your calendar for Thursday, August 25th at 7PM in the Veteran’s Memorial – Multi Purpose Room.
Reimagine Fox Hills (From the Slide Presentation)
- Shared Parking districts that will provide additional office/commercial parking.
- Explore cooperative parking opportunities between residential and commercial areas
- Additional parking with new parking structures on existing surface lots.
- A “main street” with new retail / restaurants along Bristol Parkway.
- Increased green space that connects the business and residential communities to the park, retail and restaurant amenities.
- Revitalized streetscape with wide, tree lined sidewalks, new crosswalks and creation of buffered bike lanes along Bristol Parkway to calm traffic.
Things to Consider (From the Slide Presentation)
- Focus on areas we can change
- Preserve area strengths (residential, park, and existing creative office, etc)
- Explore potential repurpose of outdated office / industrial space for create, technology and health uses.
- Increase parking supply for area
- Provide new shops for the area.
- Improve streetscape with bike lanes, special paving and new landscaping.
- Increase open space in the area.
- Consider mixed-use in the area
Concerns raised at the meeting from some residents were:
1) Impact on traffic/parking/increased density related to new projects.
2) Need to prevent loss of neighborhood’s character with new projects developed.
Main Points/Concepts presented:
All stakeholders’ input is needed to include residents, developers and commercial property owners to pursue a plan.
Since the Redevelopment Agency was dissolved by the state which offered such benefits as low interest loans, funding is needed for any new projects to occur.
For property owners to be motivated to fund projects types of incentives will be considered; example: shared parking and the potential for increased business related to revitalization projects ( see points from slide show above)
If a plan is developed it would be at least a year in the making.
If there is no general plan for the area than any changes could be made by individual property owners.
Areas not susceptible to changes are the Westfield Shopping Center, Symantec, Corporate Pointe, Fox Hills Park and Residential buildings.
